Homeschool Support in Houston
So you've decided to teach your children at home. Now what? After that big first step, you may feel exhilarated and empowered. But it can quickly seem overwhelming. We've all been there and that's why finding the right support system is crucial. There is no single support group that is right for everyone, so the best that we can do for you is help you find the group that meets your needs, whether that's here at FLAIR or with another group.
We have listed a variety of support organizations and online lists in the Houston area so that you can find homeschooling friends who can best help you and your family. Contact them, ask questions, and visit several. You may even decide to join more than one. There are so many caring homeschoolers who want to help. You are sure to find the support that's right for you and your children.
FREE (Fun and Relaxed - The Essence of Education) is a community of advocates for child-led learning. As families who practice or are exploring the unschooling lifestyle, we support and respect each other as we learn and grow in freedom.
G-HAH (Greater Houston Area Home Education) is an online discussion board developed to bring homeschoolers together and allow them to meet people you would not ordinarily know. This list is set up to discuss home education in and around Houston and 1) to learn about new techniques for accomplishing our goal of educating our children; 2) to find answers to your quandrys in your day to day efforts to educate your children; and 3) to share information about home education in and around Houston.
HAEA (Houston Alternative Education Alliance) is an inclusive homeschooling support group (meaning the only requirement is that you are supportive of alternative education). We have monthly meetings and field trips that are arranged by our members. http://www.haea.info/
Homegrown Knowledge - Home-grown Knowledge is a new member-led inclusive home school support group meeting in central Houston. No joining fees or statements of faith. All are welcome regardless of race, religion , home schooling style, etc.. The only requirement is to be truly open to others opinions and lifestyle choices. We enjoy each others differences and welcome diversity, but debates of politics and religion will not be tolerated.
HSCN (Homeschool Communication Network) is an information and service based organization providing a regional e-newsletter, workshops for the teaching parent, graduation, resources for support group leaders, and basic “how to” home school information to prospective new home schoolers. HSCN purpose is to facilitate communication between area home school organizations and the home school community.
LAF (Learning Adventures of Ft. Bend)is a member-led support network of homeschool parents in Ft Bend County including Sugar Land, Missouri City, Richmond, Rosenberg, and surrounding Houston areas sharing their talents and energies in a co-operative environment. LAF meets regularly for the purpose of providing fun and creative activities so our children can celebrate the adventures of learning and exploring their world together.
SGCHS (Southern Galveston Area Houston Homeschoolers) welcomes all homeschoolers in and out of the area. They offer lots of events and acitvities in an inclusive group and do not require a statement of faith.
SCCHE (Sugar Creek Christian Home Educators) is a cooperative of Christian families committed to supporting and encouraging one another to teach our children at home. SCCHE serves the southwest Houston, Texas area. Although our members primarily reside in Houston, Missouri City, Richmond and Sugar Land, many members live in neighboring communities. (SCCHE requires a Statement of Faith from participants and leaders.)
TAFFIE (Texas Advocates for Freedom in Education) The TAFFIE mailing list is for anyone interested in topics related to home schooling in Texas. While many of the topics are specific to Texas, there is also discussion related to homeschooling in general.
WHHE (West Houston Home Educators) is a local support group of home schooling families that have united to support and enhance the home education of our children. We provide educational and social opportunities through many avenues including academic classes; monthly meetings; regular activities. (WHHE offers inclusive participation, but requires a Statement of Faith to fill a leadership role)
